Religion can be a powerful tool

Even though I don't agree with many of the views held by the Catholic church, it does make me smile to know that they are allowing themselves to be progressive in some ways.  I don't agree that the Pope should be telling people in AIDS infested areas of Africa that condoms don't help and are a sin.  That right there can almost be construed as evil.  But, for the last 20 years or so, the Catholic church has succumbed to all the evidence and have come to the conclusion, evolution is real!

For the last 500+ years, speakers for the Catholic church have been looked to as a strong moral authority.  Whether it be a Bishop, Cardinal or Pope, their voices have been heard.  When used for something positive, this can be an overwhelminglypowerful tool.

Last night I was watching Michael Moore's documentary, "Capatilism: A Love Story", and a part of it caught my attention.  Some workers in Chicago refused to leave their closed down plant after being laid off.  They were somewhat noticed but, nowhere near the recognition they deserved.  It wasn't until after a local Bishop showed up that they started to get some real attention.  He lent his voice and his guidance to the cause and this of course stirred up quite a scene.  News traveled fast, all the way to the big man, President Obama.  He demanded justice for those 400+ employees and in just a few days, they got their severance.

Now, if all religious leaders applied their energy to doing similar good deeds, people would be able to trust the church again.  As of now all we see are the boy-banging Catholics, the Fundamental Christians that are trying to hold back science and the advancement of the human race, and those psychos from WBC that in my opinion, deserve to be thrown down into that mine in Chile.

So, if any of you have any ties to a powerful religious figurehead, please give them my message, as an atheist, I'm begging for them to look foreward and see what changes need to be made for the betterment of mankind.  Not just the interest of the church.  We may not see eye to eye all of the time but, religious or not you have to agree with me when I say, something's got to give.
